Artist Statement

Fashion, makeup, sparkly jewelry, and cultural adornments and traditions from my African American upbringing are the main focus of my current series of works. My art explores the creation of imaginary female subjects in unique compositions, akin to playing with Barbie’s. Through painting, I delve into the realm of constructing characters, each with their own story and presence, much like the experience of crafting narratives with dolls. By intertwining imagination with visual expression, I aim to challenge perceptions of beauty, identity, and representation, inviting viewers to engage with these constructed realities and perhaps find echoes of their own narratives within these painted worlds.

Yet at the heart of my work lies a deep appreciation and reverence for afrocentricity. Through my art, I hope to create a sense of connection and pride that celebrates the beauty and diversity of black culture, inviting viewers from all walks of life to appreciate and honor the rich tapestry that it represents.

With each story I piece together through imaginative play, I aim to create pieces that evoke fascination as well as inviting viewers to engage in conversations about identity, culture, and the complexities of the human experience. My dedication to creating vibrant and connected worlds through my art is a testament to my belief in the profound impact that artistic expression can have on society. It is my hope that my pieces serve as catalysts, bridging gaps, breaking down barriers, and ultimately fostering a more inclusive and empathetic world.
